Let Us Pray With You!
| Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. (John 20:24-31 niv)
OK my new friend, I know just what you're thinking. The Bible is a nice story book, but it is really difficult to find truth in it. Also, like anyone else of the period, this man named Jesus could have made a mistake that would anger the authorizes enough to cause his execution. As to rising from the dead, well let's just say it's nice fairy tale. How could anyone believe that this man calling himself the Son of God had power over the grave. No one has that power. The grave is final, the end, you cease to exist. Therefore, this story has to be no more than a fabrication, an out and out bold faced lie.
Yes, you're probably saying to yourself right now, "How does Dave know what I'm thinking." Well, I too thought those very same thoughts. I could not understand how millions of people could possibly buy into such a farfetched fantasy.
Now, for the sake of discussion, let's set the Bible aside and explore human nature as well as the historical evidence available to us. Due to human nature, it is extremely unlikely anyone would have died for a lie. Jesus would have been no exception. He probably would have retracted a lie rather than going to the cross, he did have the opportunity to recant. And what about his followers? Do you think they would have faced their own deaths while clinging to a falsehood? Let's take a moment and look at just what happened to them.
Matthew, James, and Paul were beheaded. Why? For refusing to recant the Risen Christ.
Thomas was slain by a mob and James Alpheus was thrown to his death from the roof of King Herod's temple. Why? For preaching the Risen Christ. Simon the Zealot was dismembered slowly, limb by limb, while still alive. Mathias, while tied to a cross, had rotting flesh draped over him and was slowly devoured by vultures. Nathaniel was skinned alive prior to crucifixion. Why? Again for refusing to recant the Risen Christ. Jude Thaddeus, instead of recanting, is said to have continued preaching the Risen Christ for hours, even though he hung in agony from a cross. He was finally silenced when Roman soldiers shot him to death with arrows to shut him up.
Philip, along with his sister, was hung from the column of the Greek temple. While Peter was forced to watch as the Romans crucified his beloved wife. All through her agony Peter cried out encouragement to her: "Remember Jesus!" Later he was crucified himself, head downwards. WHY? Because they, like the others, would not recant the Risen Christ.
The list goes on and on, with literally thousands of Christians martyred for the faith. Why would Jesus' chosen ones allow so many innocent people to be put to death if Jesus was a lie? Why would they stand by and watch as their own loved ones were butchered if there were no Risen Christ? The answer is, they wouldn't.
They would have recanted, but they didn't. WHY? The only conclusion that makes any sense at all is that they SAW, they HEARD, they TOUCHED God, through Jesus, the Risen Christ. Jesus did raise from the dead and no one was ever able to force the Chosen Ones to recant their witness. Not once did they stray from their testimony, no matter the cost. Yes, they knew the truth, the Good News.
Jesus did die for the redemption of our sin. He would have would have done it if you were the only person on earth. He loves you that much. He arose from the grave and will soon return for us. Then those who are written in the Book of Life will reside with Jesus for all eternity. If you are not a Christian but want Jesus to take control of your life, just ask and He will be faithful to forgive, just as the Bible, His Beloved Word teaches.
Ok! Ok! I know! Some of you still have questions. Well I've put together the Twelve Most Asked Questions About Salvation to help you. Also I have included the Romans Road to Salvation, a simple yet thorough path to Christ Jesus.
